A Waiting Room Miracle!
Miracles can happen anywhere when we are open to them. I define a miracle as a shift in perception from fear to love. By that definition, nothing in the outside world needs to be different for me to experience a miracle. Only how I’m thinking needs to change. This week, I witnessed a beautiful miracle in the waiting room at my doctor’s office of all places.
One of the receptionists in that office is truly an earth angel. Every time I visit, she is full of life and positive energy. On this day, she did something quite extraordinary. There were about 20 or 25 of us quietly waiting to be called in for bloodwork or appointments. (I was there for bloodwork, one of my least favorite things in the world!)
As she passed by, that radiant receptionist couldn’t help but notice the somber energy in the waiting room. She suddenly stopped and broke into a rousing verse of “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!”
Let’s be honest. I doubt anyone was happy to be there. Nonetheless, several people clapped their hands at the appropriate moment. Once the ice was broken, even more people joined in for the last two claps!
But she wasn’t done yet.
She went right into a second verse with “if you're happy and you know it, say Amen!” And once again, most of those formerly somber patients, including myself, gave her a big “AMEN” at the end.
You may recall that one of the lyrics in that song is, “If you’re happy and ya know it, then your face will really show it.” And I tell you what. When I looked around that waiting room, every single person was smiling. It was astounding to feel the energy in the room shift in less than two minutes!
On the outside, nothing changed. We were still sitting in the same waiting room of a doctor’s office. But that receptionist was able to create a miracle simply by singing a song and shining her light. And it took so little of her time to do it. Her presence in that office is truly a blessing.
I believe we are all like that receptionist. Our only job here on earth is to be the presence of Peace, Love, and Joy wherever we go. It doesn’t matter what our actual “job” is or what stage of life we are in. It takes so little to be a positive influence with a kind word, a smile, or maybe even a spontaneous song.
