When the Fog Clears

Recently, I noticed that my headlights had become quite cloudy. They looked bad during the day, but more importantly, I imagined at night that cloudiness was limiting how efficiently they could illuminate the road in front of me.

At first, I assumed the damage was caused by the brushes at automated car washes. Wanting to know how serious the issue was, I sent photos of my headlights to ChatGPT and asked whether they needed to be replaced. Thankfully, the response was good news. The fog looked like normal oxidation, and there were kits available that could clear it up without having to replace the headlights. Score!

After a bit of research on Amazon, I ordered a reasonably priced kit with excellent reviews. Both the manufacturer and customers claimed it worked well and was easier to use than most kits on the market. But when it arrived and I read the directions, I realized this wasn’t a quick wipe-and-go situation. It was going to require more time and effort than I had originally anticipated. I knew it would be worth it, but I’d have to do it over the weekend when I had a bigger block of free time.

Well, the weekend came and went, and I never made time to clean those headlights. Not surprisingly, lots of other activities claimed my attention. I was frustrated with myself, but I had a block of free time on Monday afternoon. I promised myself I’d do it then. Unfortunately, Monday came and went with no headlight cleaning.

On Tuesday morning, I received some disappointing news. It wasn’t horrible, just not what I had hoped for. I decided that being productive that afternoon might help lift my spirits. A physical task like cleaning my headlights would be grounding and something positive to focus on. (My apologies in advance to those of you living in colder climates before you read this next sentence.) As an added bonus, the weather was sunny and warm, with temperatures in the low 70s. It was the perfect day to tackle this project.

I brought the kit, a spray bottle of water, and a clean towel out to my car and began meticulously wiping the headlights in a circular motion with the deoxidation pads. As the fogginess slowly disappeared, it struck me that this was the perfect day for another reason entirely.

The metaphor was not lost on me. There I was, cleaning my headlights so I could see more clearly at night. This task was helping clear the fog from my thoughts as well. Once I did that, more light could come in, and I was able to see my situation in a more positive and hopeful light.

There were two lessons wrapped up in this experience. The first was that Divine Timing is always at play. Spirit knew this metaphor would be most helpful to me on Tuesday, which I believe is why I did not get to this project sooner.

The second lesson is one I’ve written about before, probably during tax prep season. When a project feels daunting, I’ve learned that forcing myself to do it (or beating myself up for avoiding it) rarely helps. Instead, I’ve learned to trust that a day will come when I have the capacity to take it on. That doesn’t mean I’m suddenly thrilled about the task, but when I wait for that day, things tend to flow more smoothly. That’s certainly been my experience at tax time. And in this case, not only did my headlights become clear, but so did my head.

Is there something in your life that feels foggy right now? A task you’ve been putting off or a situation you’re struggling to see clearly? Have you been hard on yourself about it? Perhaps it’s not procrastination. Maybe it simply hasn’t been the right moment. I’m not suggesting that waiting is always the answer, but I am encouraging you to be gentle with yourself. Trust that there will be a day when you can say, “Yes. Today is the day.” When you wait for that inspiration, circumstances often align in ways that make the task easier and sometimes even enjoyable!

Could you use some assistance in clearing mental and emotional fog as you move through life? Would you like support in discerning the right timing for a project? If so, I invite you to schedule a Spiritual Coaching Session (or a series of sessions). Much like a sports coach, I’ll offer tools, strategies, and new perspectives to help you develop the skills needed to navigate life with greater confidence and ease. I’ll also be cheering you on each week!

A Private Family Constellation Session can also help uncover what may be clouding your path and holding you back from the healthy, happy, prosperous life you’re meant to live. As this year comes to a close, now is an ideal time to restore clarity, release what no longer serves you, and step into the new year with brighter vision and clear direction. Please look around my website for more information, to book a session, or to purchase a gift certificate for a loved one.

Until next time, may the clouds part in miraculous ways so that more light can shine into all areas of your life.

Without the clouds the problem will emerge in all its primitive simplicity.
