A Message of Timeless Love from My Dad & Debbie Downer
This past Sunday would have been my father’s 96th birthday. Sadly, he made his transition when he was just 45 years old. Because he died so young, I didn’t have many years to establish a connection with him in physical form, but I’m grateful that I have since then. This year, on his birthday, I received a powerful message that reminded me his love transcends time and space.
Early that morning, my friend Carrie left me some messages while she was out walking her dog. She had put my father’s birthday in her calendar and was just talking about him when suddenly she said, “Oh my gosh, John! Two white feathers just drifted down from a tree right in front of me!” She was sure this was a sign from my parents in Spirit and suggested I watch for more messages from my dad throughout the day.
Carrie is a gifted intuitive counselor and medium, so I listen when she says things like that. About an hour later, I received a profound message.
For the past year or two, my Sunday “church” has been a walk along the beach while listening to an inspirational podcast. I usually listen to Miracle Voices, a podcast based on A Course in Miracles. However, they release new episodes biweekly, so there wasn’t a new one this week. What would I listen to instead?
Then I remembered hearing Amy Poehler interview her fellow Saturday Night Live alum, Rachel Dratch, on her podcast earlier in the week. Even if you don’t watch SNL, you’ve probably seen or heard of Rachel’s most famous character, Debbie Downer. If you haven’t, click here to watch Debbie Downer’s first skit where the cast tries valiantly (but unsuccessfully) to keep from laughing.
But Rachel isn’t a downer. On the contrary, she’s quite positive and interested in uplifting metaphysical and spiritual practices that some call “woo-woo.” In fact, she has her own podcast called Woo Woo with Rachel Dratch, where she talks to guests about paranormal phenomena and other mystical experiences. Her podcast came across my radar a few years ago, but I had forgotten about it until I heard that interview.
So that Sunday morning, I scrolled through past episodes of Woo Woo to see if anything caught my eye. One episode from November 1, 2023, titled “A Tale of Time Travel,” grabbed my attention, so I listened to that one. Little did I know it would be a tale about a father’s love.
I won’t recount the whole story, but what Rachel’s friend Tara shared absolutely blew my mind. In college, Tara had an unusually vivid, full-sensory dream where she encountered her father as a teenage boy on his way home from baseball practice. As the story unfolded, it became crystal clear that love and connection transcend time and space. Since it involved her dad, it was the perfect story for me to hear on my father’s birthday. You might write that off as mere coincidence, but I love looking for these kinds of signs and synchronicities. It certainly makes life more fun. And it causes no harm. There were over 100 Woo Woo episodes to choose from, but somehow I landed on this one from 2 years ago. I choose to believe my dad had a hand in guiding me to that episode on his birthday to remind me that we will always be connected through love.
Even though my father passed away so many years ago, I feel closer to him now than I ever have. He showed up in my very first Family Constellation in 2012, and it was a game changer. Not only in my personal life but also in my professional one. After that profound experience, I began training to be a facilitator of this miraculous modality and have been loving it ever since.
