Spreading Rose Quartz Love: A Birthday Journey Through NYC
I celebrated another birthday last week, so I felt inspired to share this birthday story from 2015. I can’t believe it was 10 years ago that I traveled with two friends to New York City to spread some love and plant rose quartz crystals. I hope you enjoy the story:
Since Valentine’s Day weekend of 2004, I’ve been sprinkling rose quartz crystals around the planet like tiny pink prayers. It all started when I met my rose quartz soul family—beautiful beings who taught me, among other things, that these soft pink stones hold the frequency of unconditional love and compassion. The intention is to create a web of love and peace all over the world, something we can all tap into when we’re feeling lost, low, or simply want to connect more deeply with the presence of Love.
Yes, we can absolutely do this kind of energy work without the crystals, but there’s something sweet about having a tangible reminder of our intention. I’ll always be grateful to my friend and teacher, Mac, who gifted me my first rose quartz necklace, and to the incredible group I met that weekend—each of them committed to expanding the love in the rose quartz grid.
In 2015, I celebrated my birthday in New York City with two Florida friends, and naturally, I brought some rose quartz. My friends enthusiastically helped me spread the love throughout the city, one little crystal at a time.
We kicked things off in Brooklyn with some epic pizza (when in NYC, right?) and a magical walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, taking in the glittering skyline of Manhattan. Our first official “love drop” was at Ground Zero. We sprinkled rose quartz at the base of the trees that surround the perimeter where the towers fell. Once we finished, I took a few prayerful moments to activate the grid and imagine peace washing over the hearts of all those affected by the events of that day.
I know. I’m weird. Why not just have dinner at a nice restaurant and see a Broadway show like a normal person? Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy those things, too. However, it is also a joy and an honor whenever I have the opportunity to help shift fear to love.
There were plenty of places to plant rose quartz as we rode bikes through Central Park the following day. My favorite spot in the park is the Bethesda Fountain with the Angel of the Waters statue overlooking the courtyard. As we were tossing tiny pink stones in the pond behind the statue, a sweet couple from the UK asked what we were feeding the turtles. After explaining it wasn’t turtle food, I gave each of them some rose quartz to throw into the pond to make their own wishes. It always warms my heart to share the rose quartz tradition with strangers, especially when I can tell they really resonate with the intention.
By the way, water is a great conduit for energy, so I love to toss rose quartz in fountains, ponds, lakes, rivers, and oceans. I believe those little pink stones are still sending out waves of love to anyone who passes by.
One stop I knew I had to make was Columbia University, the “birthplace” of my favorite spiritual teaching, A Course in Miracles. That year (2015) marked its 50th “birthday.” In 1965, Helen Schucman, a professor in the Psychology Department at Columbia, first heard that gentle, authoritative voice say, “This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.”
As fate would have it, my travel buddy, George, graduated from Columbia, so he knew exactly how to get there and navigate the campus. It felt so right to plant rose quartz there to say thank you to Helen, her co-scribe, Bill Thetford, and all those who played a part in bringing this powerful teaching to the world. I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to have such an emotional reaction during that sacred offering.
I closed my eyes and held the stones to my heart before tossing them into the fountains in front of the old library building that housed the Psychology Department offices. As I did, an overwhelming sense of gratitude washed over me and tears welled up in my eyes. It was a powerful feeling of connection that I will never forget.
Our final “pink love fest” moment came on our last night in SoHo. We stumbled upon a stunning mural of the Earth with a red heart at the center, surrounded by bold red lions marching around its circumference. It felt like the perfect symbol of the lion-hearted love we were spreading around the planet and anchoring into the city. Of course, this Leo loved it!
While planting rose quartz and taking pictures of this mural, a photography student approached us to ask if we would be willing to participate in her class project. Her assignment? Find out what we thought of when asked about human rights violations. The first thing that came to my mind was our practice of spreading rose quartz crystals at places like Ground Zero and even outside a grocery store where we’d witnessed a tense altercation just moments before.
George’s first thought was profound! He suggested that instead of looking for human rights violations, why not look for human rights affirmations? Indeed, what we look for we find. She loved the idea and asked George to write it down so that she could share it with her professor exactly as he stated it.
After our heartfelt conversation, our new friend snapped some photos of us in front of that mural and we said our goodbyes. That’s when another young man came over to ask what we were doing and why everyone was stopping to take pictures by that mural. Spirit gave us yet another opportunity to share our story and give away more rose quartz. Just like the ripples that are created when we toss a stone in the water, I have no doubt the ripples of love we created in New York will keep expanding and touching hearts. I know the people we met and the experiences we had deeply touched mine.
If you like the idea of creating a web of love and peace around the planet, why not join us and start planting your own rose quartz crystals? You can purchase them for a few dollars online or at any craft store that sells jewelry-making supplies. Or simply set the intention to be the presence of love, peace, and joy wherever you go. That works too!
If that feels out of reach for you right now, you’re not alone. I’ve certainly been there. That’s why I offer Spiritual Coaching and Family Constellations, both rooted in the loving principles of A Course in Miracles. These tools are designed to gently guide you back to your heart, where the peace you seek already lives.
You can learn more about these offerings and schedule an appointment on my website.
Until next time, may you always feel the soft waves of peace, love, and joy washing over your heart wherever you may travel…
The light in one awakens it in all.
