Trusting the Timing of Life

Lately, I’ve found myself feeling a bit impatient with how long things are taking to shift in a certain area of my life. Are you experiencing that in any area of your life? If so, read on. I searched my archives and found this lesson that life taught me a few years ago about trusting the timing of life. Reading it again helped me come back to peace. I hope it will do the same for you.

It was January of 2021, and the lease on my Honda was ending. You may recall at that time the COVID-19 pandemic was still causing major supply chain issues in the car market. To avoid limited choices and higher prices, I decided to purchase my car with a lease buyout.

The first challenge occurred after I visited a Houston Honda dealer to inquire about the lease buyout. Due to very poor customer service and more than $2,000 of mysterious additional fees that no one could adequately explain, I decided not to pursue a loan with them.

Imagine my surprise when I logged into my Honda Financial Services account the next day to discover my balance was $0! Apparently, without my signature or authorization, that dealer sent them a payment for my car. Technically, they just gave me a car! But I had a feeling they would not see it that way.

I called Honda Financial Services to explain what happened and waited on hold for at least 30 minutes. Little did I know this would be the first of many half-hour chunks of time spent listening to that hold music and Honda’s special offers. When a customer service agent finally answered, I explained my situation and she assured me that she would get the paperwork straightened out with the dealership.

In the meantime, I had secured a loan through other means, so she advised me to mail the payoff check to them along with my odometer disclosure statement. Once they received my check and that document, Honda would send me the title via FedEx. That all sounded good to me.

But “soon” stretched into months. Each time I called Honda, I’d spend another half hour on hold, only to learn that the title had been sent to the wrong place and that I’d have to wait another 8–10 weeks. Meanwhile, my June 1 departure date to move back to Florida was getting closer and closer.

I had it in my head that this title issue needed to be resolved before I left Texas. Three days before my move, I surrendered to the fact that it wasn’t going to happen. I called Honda Financial Services once again, listened to the same hold music and Honda’s seemingly endless special deals, and then explained the situation to yet another customer service rep. She promised that Honda would FedEx my title to the temporary Florida address I gave her.

Unfortunately, that’s not what happened. The title was sent to my old Houston address and then had to be forwarded to me. When it finally arrived in Florida in July (seven months after my initial request!), I was ready to celebrate. But here’s the ironic part: after all that waiting, the title sat in my desk drawer for another month.

Why? Because my new Florida apartment wouldn’t be ready until mid-August. Rather than change my address twice, it made sense to wait to get my Florida driver’s license, title, and plates all at the same time. When that fateful day finally came, everything unfolded with ease and grace. I was able to get all of this taken care of in one office with the same helpful representative—Miguel, who shattered every DMV stereotype with his friendliness and efficiency.

And here’s the best part: because my car was originally titled in Florida, I saved over $200 in fees. Florida’s sales tax was also $100 less than it would have been in Texas. Those delays saved me time, money, and unnecessary paperwork. I was so grateful! What a powerful lesson in surrendering what I thought should happen, and trusting the divine timing of the Universe.
