Message with a Side of Fries

Last week, I shared some “Messages on the Rocks” from my mother and the angels. You may recall that one involved an empty bottle of Black Velvet whiskey. Well, my mother was at it again this week. There’s a sports bar not far from my home that serves delicious sweet potato fries and plays fun music from the 80s and 90s. Although I have no affinity for the sports on the screens around the restaurant, I really enjoy those fries and the music! 

Earlier this week, I had a craving for those sweet potato fries. I told myself I “should” be eating the food I have at home and not spending money at a restaurant. But the craving was too strong. I indulged. Can you guess what song started playing in the restaurant while I was enjoying those delicious sweet potato fries? (Hint: Refer back to the first paragraph.)

Yes, it was “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles, a song that was all over the radio and spent two weeks at Number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1990. If you read last week’s story, you will know why I always think of my mom when I hear that song. So hearing it soon after finding that empty whiskey bottle felt like another wink from her. She was blessing me to enjoy those fries and not feel guilty about it!

Perhaps I’m rationalizing, but I like to think my mom is still communicating with me even though she is not here in physical form. Every time I think of her or share a funny story about her, she is very much alive in my heart. And she still makes me laugh! It’s different now, but she will always be with me.

So whether your parents are still here in physical form or they’ve made their transition, may this message inspire you to focus on love and laughter, and release anything that is unlike love (ie. guilt or fear.)
